Le jardin romain

The Garden

The guiding principles for the project were:

1-      To enhance the monumental pool this lies at its centre.

2-      To present theme gardens specially designed for educational purposes.

Archaeological data concerning plant species present at the site are insufficient to create a real “reconstruction” of the Greco-Latin deity gardens with the plants generally associated with them.

The area lying to the west of the garden is evocative of “useful” gardens, the italic deisties reflecting an agrarian civilization, and illustrating what might have been the Roman Gardens of the first period.

Conversely the area lying opposite, to the east, including the “ornamental” gardens, evokes the influence of Greek civilization on Roman gardens of later years.

Combining these two aspects seemed appropriate, especially in view of the fact that in the Augustan period, the trend was for a return to everything reminiscent of Greek civilization.
